Old Fourth Ward
Craftsman-Style Home
Located in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, this residential project sits within one of the city’s most dynamic and design-forward neighborhoods. Known for its proximity to the Atlanta BeltLine and landmarks like Ponce City Market, Old Fourth Ward blends historic character with modern living. The area’s mix of renovated homes, walkability, and strong design presence makes it a sought-after location for homeowners and creatives alike.

The homeowners of this Craftsman-style home on Rankin Street, originally built in 1965, thoughtfully renovated it to reflect a modern aesthetic with subtle retro influences. One of the homeowners is an interior designer, and brought a refined approach, resulting in a cohesive and sophisticated living environment.
The home features a variety of distinct spaces, each with its own character. A sitting room anchored by a piano offers a quiet, welcoming entry point, while the main kitchen leans into a mid-century modern palette of gray and white. Just off the kitchen, a smaller sitting and bar area creates a natural extension for gathering and entertaining.
Upstairs, a narrow kitchenette and breakfast space adds a quaint and cozy spot. A fun highlight is the retro Smeg refrigerator that reinforces the home’s original character. The dining room takes a more understated approach, with a soft cream palette that feels both sophisticated and timeless.
An upstairs bathroom stands out for its custom tile work, slatted wood vanity, and built-in shelving. Though its footprint is small, this bath expertly combines texture and function without being visually overwhelming. Outside, the tropic=like backyard is for both relaxation and entertaining. It features a pool, hot tub, artificial turf, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and grill area.
Historic roots + contemporary living
This Old Fourth Ward home reflects the evolving character of the neighborhood, combining iconic architecture with modern updates. Projects like this highlight the possibilities of balancing original structure with contemporary living. As an Atlanta architectural and interior photographer, I’m always drawn to homes like this: a thoughtfully updated home that still honors its historic influences.
