Sundogs: a fascinating weather phenomenon or a great name for a band?

Both, actually.

I once read an interesting article about people in Mexico City who were all astir about witnessing a giant rainbow-like halo around the sun.

A UFO? An ancient Aztec omen? Armageddon?

No, it’s a normal but amazing natural phenomenon where ice crystals cause light to bend around the sun in a halo, sometimes accompanied with spots of bright lights on the sides called Sundogs.

(On tour now!)

Aside from the fascinating physics, what really struck me about this article was the last quote. On being interviewed about it, the coordinator of the National Weather Service said, “It’s very common. The thing is that people never look up.”

To me, that was poignant, and said volumes.

Indeed we don’t look up. We’re so busy being distracted, looking down at our phones, our watches, our calendars. We forget to stop and appreciate the world around us.

I feel it’s my responsibility and passion as an artist to highlight the things that we miss, and bring them to the forefront. Whether it’s in nature, in a built design, or the relationship between the two.

And when the band Sundogs forms and needs a photographer, I’m ready!
